Women, Infants, & Children (WIC)

WIC (Women, Infants, Children) is the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) is a federal program funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The WIC Program provides healthy supplemental foods for pregnant women, postpartum women, breastfeeding women, infants and children up until the age of 5 who meet the eligibility requirements for the program. Program services include nutrition education, breastfeeding promotion, breastfeeding education, breastfeeding support, referrals to human service organizations and referrals for healthcare.

Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (BPFC) Program

North Carolina receives special funding from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to build and sustain Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (BFPC) Programs in the Local Health Department. The funding for the BFPC Program is allocated through the United States Department of Agriculture, Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for WIC. The purpose of the BFPC Program is to increase breastfeeding initiation and duration among women enrolled in the Local Health Department WIC Program through mother-to-mother peer breastfeeding support.
