Happy Women's History Month! Dorthea Dix was a public health activist who fought to improve healthcare for the mentally ill as well as wounded soldiers. She was born in Maine in 1802 and not much is known about her childhood. As a young adult, she taught children but was forced to stop when she became ill. It was during this time that she grew interested in changing how those with mental illnesses were treated. She worked to establish asylums in several states, including North Carolina. During the Civil War, Dix served as the Superintendent of Army Nurses for the Union Army. After the war, she continued to fight for social conditions and reform.#womeninpublichealth #publichealthleaders #PublicHealth #womenleadership ... See MoreSee Less
